What should I pack for Venezuela?

Short answer

Pack your passport, small US dollar notes, medicines and clothes for each destination. Plugs are type A and B, at 120 V. In October 2026, Aerocaribe allowed 3 kg carry-on and 10 kg checked on the small plane to Los Roques. According to SENIAT and GOV.UK, new goods over US$1,000 pay duty.

Packing checklist

Go through it before you close your bag; each item takes you to the section with the facts.

Documents

  • Your passport, always on you (documents and money).
  • A copy of your passport and travel documents, on your phone and on paper (our own tip). The Government of Canada says you must carry your passport at all times and keep your documents secure, and warns that phone and internet services go down during power cuts.

Clothes for each destination

  • Beach: light clothes, swimwear, a cap and sunscreen.
  • Mérida and Colonia Tovar: layers and something warm.
  • Canaima: long sleeves and insect repellent.

The reasons are in clothes for each destination.

Electronics

  • An adapter if your plugs are not type A or B, and check whether your charger says 100–240 V (plugs and voltage).
  • A power bank and a small torch, for power cuts.

Small plane to Los Roques

  • With Aerocaribe, in October 2026: one bag of up to 10 kg and 3 kg of hand luggage.
  • Liquids in hand luggage, in containers under 100 ml inside a clear bag.

All of it is in the small plane to Los Roques.

Documents and money

First things first: your passport, and keep it on you. The Government of Canada says you must carry it at all times and that identification is required to pay by card. What your passport needs to enter is in do I need a visa for Venezuela?. For money, bring US dollars in small notes: dollars are widely accepted, and the same Government of Canada advises small notes for daily purchases. ATMs, cards and exchange are covered in money in Venezuela.

Clothes for each destination

For the beach (Isla Margarita, Los Roques, Isla de Coche or Morrocoy), light clothes, swimwear, a cap and sunscreen are enough. For the mountains, bring layers and something warm: both in Mérida, in the Andes, where GOV.UK warns of altitude sickness, and in Colonia Tovar, in the Coastal Range. And for Canaima, long sleeves and insect repellent: the CDC ask you to avoid bites against dengue and Zika, and list Angel Falls among the malaria areas. What they say about vaccines and prevention is in Venezuela vaccines and travel health.

The small plane to Los Roques

You fly to Los Roques on small planes, mainly from Maiquetía, and that is where luggage counts. On 28 October 2026, Aerocaribe allowed one checked bag of up to 10 kg per passenger and 3 kg of hand luggage on its domestic flights. Everyone checks in their own bag, and excess baggage is paid at the airport at check-in, if there is space on the plane. Liquids in hand luggage go in individual containers under 100 ml, inside a clear bag. If the flight is part of your package, ask TripVenezuela which airline you are flying with. How to get there and what the posadas include is in how to get to Los Roques.

Medicines and first aid

Bring your medication, and plenty of it. GOV.UK reports that the Venezuelan Pharmaceutical Federation has recorded a shortage of 80% of medical supplies, and advises bringing enough for your whole stay, plus extra in case your return is delayed. Keep it in your hand luggage, which is where Aerocaribe recommends carrying medicines, documents and valuables. And before you leave, see a travel vaccination clinic or your doctor.

Customs: what to declare

If you are bringing new things, keep the US$1,000 figure in mind. SENIAT’s FAQ (its 2023 version, the latest that can be read from outside Venezuela) says a foreign tourist may bring in their used personal effects, and that new items for personal use or consumption enter duty-free up to a value of US$1,000 per person; above that, they are treated as an ordinary import. GOV.UK and the Government of Canada repeat that threshold. All passengers and tourists fill in and sign the customs baggage declaration, handed out by the airline or, failing that, by SENIAT officers at the airport, and some goods need a permit or health registration from the relevant ministry.

Cash must be declared from US$10,000, as GOV.UK and Canada point out. On the way out, Canada warns that the National Guard thoroughly screens departing visitors’ luggage for drugs: pack your bag yourself, keep it with you and do not carry anything through customs for anyone else.

Plugs and voltage

Venezuela uses type A plugs (two flat pins) and type B plugs (two flat pins and a round earth pin), at 120 V and 60 Hz, according to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). If yours are a different type, bring an adapter. Check your charger’s label too: if it says 100–240 V, it works with the adapter; if not, you need a voltage converter. And since the Government of Canada warns that power cuts are common in many parts of the country, a power bank and a small torch will get you out of more than one tight spot.
