Visa and entry

Do I need a visa to travel to Venezuela?

Short answer

Whether you need a visa for Venezuela depends on your passport and how you enter. US and Canadian tourists need a visa before travel. British citizens may visit by air for up to 90 days without one, while Spain and many European countries are on Venezuela’s air-entry exemption list. Check again before booking.

United States

US passport holders need a Venezuelan visa before travelling. The US Department of State says visas are not issued on arrival and links to Venezuela's official electronic visa system. Apply and receive the visa before departure; the official page consulted does not give a universal processing time, so allow enough time and confirm the status before buying a non-refundable ticket.

Canada

Canadian passport holders need a tourist visa before travelling. The Government of Canada says visas are not available on arrival and recommends confirming the rules with the Venezuelan representative in Canada because entry requirements can change.

United Kingdom

A person travelling on a full British citizen passport can visit by air for up to 90 days without a visa, using the tourist card issued on arrival, and must show a return or onward ticket. Entry by land or sea may require a visa in advance. Other British passport types should check directly with a Venezuelan embassy or consulate.

European Union and Spain

Venezuela's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists Spain and many other European countries as exempt from a tourist visa when entering by air. The exemption is based on nationality, not EU membership as a whole. Check your exact passport country on the official list; if it is absent, contact a Venezuelan consulate before travelling.

Passport validity

The published rules are not worded identically for every nationality. The United States asks its travellers for six months' validity beyond arrival and two blank pages. Canada and the United Kingdom tell their citizens to have at least six months remaining beyond the expected departure from Venezuela. Follow the requirement for your passport and confirm it with your airline.

What immigration may ask on arrival

Carry a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation and evidence that you can support yourself during the stay. These documents appear in official entry guidance and in Venezuela's tourist visa requirements. Immigration authorities make the final admission decision, even when a nationality is visa-exempt.
