Angel Falls: when should you go and how much does it cost?
Short answer
According to the NASA POWER 1991–2020 climatology for Canaima, January to March are the driest months and from May to August it rains far more. In the dry season, says INPARQUES, the water of the falls evaporates into mist before reaching the ground. The 4-day package costs from US$778 per person; ask separately about the falls excursion.
The short answer
In Canaima it rains far more from May to August than from January to March, and that changes the falls: INPARQUES explains that in the dry season the water drops with such force from the top of Auyantepui that it evaporates into a fine mist before reaching the ground. The dry months bring less rain; the wet months, more water in the falls and more cloud. The 4-day package from Caracas costs from US$778 per person, and the Angel Falls excursion is not on its page: ask about it before booking.
Angel Falls
INPARQUES calls Angel Falls by its Pemón name, Kerepakupai Vená, and describes it as the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world, at 979 metres, rising at the top of Auyantepui. You reach its base by sailing up the Churún river by curiara, the traditional dugout canoe, and according to INPARQUES the Pemón are the only authorised guides for those expeditions.
Where the figures come from
The numbers below are the NASA POWER 1991–2020 climatology at 6.24 N, 62.85 W, by the Canaima lagoon, where the camps are. They are thirty-year monthly averages, built from satellite and model data for one grid cell, not readings from a weather station in the park or at the falls themselves: treat them as a guide to the pattern of the year, not as a forecast.
The weather month by month
| Month | Mean temperature (°C) | Rain (mm per day) | Relative humidity (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 24.5 | 1.7 | 74 |
| February | 25.4 | 1.6 | 68 |
| March | 26.6 | 1.9 | 63 |
| April | 26.4 | 4.1 | 69 |
| May | 25.0 | 8.2 | 82 |
| June | 24.0 | 12.2 | 88 |
| July | 23.8 | 10.9 | 89 |
| August | 24.2 | 10.0 | 88 |
| September | 24.8 | 6.8 | 85 |
| October | 25.1 | 5.1 | 82 |
| November | 24.9 | 4.8 | 82 |
| December | 24.5 | 3.1 | 79 |
The annual average is 5.9 mm of rain a day and 24.9 °C.
Dry months and wet months
January, February and March stay below 2 mm of rain a day, with the lowest humidity of the year. From May to August the average is above 8 mm a day, with June the wettest month (12.2 mm), almost eight times February. September to December is a transition: rain falls month by month from 6.8 to 3.1 mm a day. The temperature barely changes: between 23.8 °C in July and 26.6 °C in March.
And the curiara trip?
The way up to Angel Falls is by river, and rivers depend on rain. Even so, we found no official source publishing which months the Churún can be navigated or the falls' flow month by month, so this guide gives no dates. If Angel Falls is your reason for going, TripVenezuela confirms with the provider whether the excursion runs on your dates before you pay anything.
