How do you get to Canaima and Angel Falls?

Short answer

Canaima is reached by air: TripVenezuela’s package includes round-trip tickets from Caracas and the transfer to the camp. Angel Falls is reached by curiara, a dugout canoe, up the Churún river, according to INPARQUES; the 4-day package includes the excursions to the El Sapo and El Hacha falls, not Angel Falls: ask before booking.

How you get there

Canaima National Park is in Bolívar state, in south-eastern Venezuela: it was decreed on 12 June 1962, covers about 30,000 km² and was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1994. INPARQUES divides it into two immense sectors: the eastern one, with the Gran Sabana and Roraima, and the western one, with the Canaima lagoon and Angel Falls. You reach the lagoon by air: TripVenezuela's package includes round-trip tickets from Caracas, the airport welcome and the transfer to the camp. There is no road access to that sector.

Angel Falls

INPARQUES describes the way up to Angel Falls as sailing up the Churún river by curiara, the traditional dugout canoe, «one of the greatest adventures». The Canaima lagoon, fed by the Carrao river, has the Hacha, Golondrina, Wadaima and Ucaima falls on its shore. The Angel Falls excursion depends on the level of the rivers and is organised by the provider at the camp itself.

How many days you need

The package in the catalogue is 4 days and 3 nights at a camp. It includes meals and drinks and the excursions to the El Sapo and El Hacha falls; it does not say it includes the Angel Falls excursion. If that excursion is your reason for going, ask TripVenezuela before booking whether it can be added, on which dates and at what cost.

Travel advice about Bolívar

The UK advises against all travel to the Orinoco Mining Arc, south of the Orinoco river in Bolívar state, and the United States applies level 4, «do not travel», to rural areas of the state. Neither page names the park; check the map on each one and is Venezuela safe to visit? before booking.

The 4-day package

TripVenezuela offers the trip and manages the booking with you; the flights, the camp and the excursions are provided by third parties. See the package in Canaima; the page lists what is included. The sources on this page were accessed on 12 October 2026.
