What is there to do in Mérida, Venezuela?

Short answer

The main attraction of Mérida, in the Venezuelan Andes, is the Mukumbarí cable car, which Venezuela’s tourism ministry describes as the highest in the world: it reopened on 19 August 2026 after an overhaul and ran daily for the holiday season. The cable car

Mérida, capital of Mérida state, is a city in the Venezuelan Andes surrounded by mountains. Its main attraction is the Mukumbarí cable car system, which Venezuela's tourism ministry describes as the highest in the world. According to its article of 19 August 2026, the cable car reopened that day after a complete overhaul (new reclosers and frequency converters, a reconditioned earthing network and new electrical protections, carried out by Ventel and Corpoelec) and would run every day of the week for the rest of the holiday season. The minister attributed the delay to the double earthquake of 24 June, which held up the arrival of equipment.

What to confirm before you go

The Mintur article publishes no timetable, fares or list of stations, and the daily operation it announces refers to the 2026 holiday season. Before booking, ask TripVenezuela to confirm whether the cable car operates on your dates, its hours and the ticket price; this guide quotes no figures the source does not publish.
