What happened

On 24 June 2026 Venezuela suffered two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, which, according to GOV.UK, caused significant damage in La Guaira, parts of Caracas and elsewhere. GOV.UK still warns of the possibility of aftershocks. Maiquetía airport, which serves Caracas, resumed commercial operations on 1 September with limited capacity.

What the sources say about Isla Margarita

None of the official pages we consulted on 12 October 2026 reports damage in Nueva Esparta state, where Isla Margarita is, and none certifies its condition either. Venezuela's tourism ministry said on 9 September 2026 that air operations were recovering (65 % of the domestic flights that existed before 24 June) and mentioned Margarita only in relation to mobility and seasonal price changes. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its page updated on 17 September, still described the Caracas airport as closed, with airlines operating from secondary airports; GOV.UK, updated on 2 September, says it had reopened. When two official pages differ, ask your airline.

Porlamar airport

We found no official page describing the state of Porlamar airport (PMV) after the earthquakes. Copa Airlines sells its Panama City–Porlamar route on its website, and domestic flights are operated by Venezuelan airlines whose schedules change.
