What are the Morrocoy cays and how do you visit them?

Short answer

Morrocoy National Park, on the coast of Falcón state, has dozens of cays; INPARQUES highlights Cayo Sombrero, Cayo Sal, Los Juanes and Tucupido. You visit them by peñero, the traditional boats, from the park’s piers. Two of TripVenezuela’s packages include the transfer to the cays; the park fee is confirmed by TripVenezuela when you book.

The cays

Morrocoy National Park is on the coast of Falcón state, was decreed on 26 May 1974 and covers more than 32,000 hectares of marine and coastal ecosystems plus some land. INPARQUES names four of its best-known cays, Cayo Sombrero, Cayo Sal, Los Juanes and Tucupido, and says there are dozens more. Cerro Chichiriviche, a hill, is also inside the park.

Where the boats leave from

INPARQUES describes the visit as sailing by peñero, the traditional boats, to the cays, and says the experience starts at the piers. Its page does not name the departure points. The packages in the catalogue place Posada Cocolandia in Chichiriviche; the exact pier for your package, the time and the cay you visit are confirmed by TripVenezuela with the provider when you request a booking.

Park fee

The INPARQUES page on Morrocoy publishes no entry fee or visitor rules. If anything is payable at the pier or on the cay, TripVenezuela confirms the amount and the currency before you pay anything; this guide does not repeat old figures.

Packages

The three Morrocoy packages in the catalogue are 3 days and 2 nights: one at a posada, all-inclusive, with a round-trip transfer to the cay, breakfast, packed lunch, a cooler with ice, non-alcoholic drinks and dinner; one at Hotel Hesperia Morrocoy, all-inclusive; and a weekend at Posada Cocolandia, in Chichiriviche, with breakfasts and lunches, pool and a transfer to the cays. See the packages in Morrocoy; each page lists what is included.
